A group of residents from the Internal Medicine Residency Programme at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) recently placed 4th in an international competition, 'Doctors Dilemma', in the United States.
The competition was held during the American College of Physicians meeting in Philadelphia, US', and brought together teams of residents from 60 different internal medicine training programmes from the US and Canada, with the team from Qatar being the only group competing from outside North America.
"This annual competition is one of the most established and challenging of its kind in the world," Internal Medicine Residency Programme Director Dr. Ahmed Al Mohammed said.
"Throughout the three-day competition, residents were tested on their competence and medical knowledge. This was the first time a group from Qatar had entered the international event and to come fourth out of 60 incredibly strong teams is a remarkable achievement," added Al Mohammed.
For her part, Deputy Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Programme said: " Our residency programmes at HMC provide trainee doctors with the skills and knowledge required to make them into excellent healthcare professionals capable of playing leading roles in the delivery of clinical care to patients.
In 2012, HMC became the first hospital system in the region to achieve the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International certification. This made Qatar only the second country outside of the United States to have the prestigious accreditation conferred upon it, which indicates that it meets the highest and most rigourous standards for physicians' specialty training.
