Hamad Medical Corporation announced that all development and renovation of the Surgical Specialty Center at the Old Women's Hospital will soon be completed and fully operational early next year, after the current completion of 50 percent of these works.

With its full operation, various surgical specialties such as orthopedic, vascular, urinary and organ transplantation will be transferred to the center, while obesity surgery patients will be transferred to the building at a later stage.

Vice Chair of Surgery at HMC, Dr. Mohamed El Akkad, said that the center of Hamad General Hospital will contribute to increasing the capacity of the surgical department, as it includes 3 new operating rooms that are to be added to the operating rooms of Hamad Hospital, bringing the total operating rooms in the hospital to 20 rooms, which contributes to In increasing the number of surgeries by 12 cases per day and thus the total daily surgeries at Hamad General Hospital reaches about 80 cases per day.

He added in a press statement that the increase in the number of beds and the expansion of the center contribute to performing more non-urgent surgeries by up to about 50 percent, and therefore there will be no room to postpone the operations and waiting lists, which also leads to reducing the waiting period of patients in the emergency department. Besides, it allows the patient to easily move inside the hospital and obtain medical services and needs within one facility and at the hands of multidisciplinary work teams, which improves the quality of services provided to patients and reduces the period of their hospitalization.

He pointed out that the center, after its full operation, will determine the path of the patient in the hospital step by step through a modern integrated system that helps patients of daily surgeries register their admission to the hospital on the day of the surgical procedure and preparing them in the morning, then returning again on the same day to perform the surgery without the need to stay overnight the night before the surgery.

It is worth noting that the Surgical Specialty Center was partially started operating at the beginning of last year 2019 in the old Women's Hospital building, most of whose services were later transferred to the Women's Wellness and Research Center (WWRC).

It is planned to establish a specialized surgery center that surpasses its counterparts from international surgical centers to become a distinguished medical edifice after providing it with the latest medical devices and equipment to be an important addition to the health system in Qatar.
