HMC prepares launch heart transplant programme Hospital

It has been announced in an article by The Peninsula on April 19, 2022 that Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is soon to launch the heart transplant programme in the light of the success of previous transplant programmes such as kidney, liver and lung.

The first heart transplant is expected to take place in the current year of 2022, as per Medical Director of Hamad General Hospital and Director of Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation, Dr. Yousef Al Maslamani.

It was stated in the article that the year 2021 has been the best year so far for organ donations and transplants; however, they are anticipating a better performance in the year 2022. Additionally, it was mentioned that the year 2021 saw more than 140 living donors amongst which 31 were able to donate an organ as they met the criterias. There were 13 deceased donors as well.

It was also mentioned that the year 2021 saw a total of 48 kidney transplants, 7 liver and 1 lung transplant executed.

Qatar only allows family members as living donors for kidney transplants and currently, there are 480,000 people on Qatar’s organ donor registry.
