Energy and Industry Minister HE Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada has urged young Qataris to equip themselves with technical and vocational trainings to be better placed for lucrative jobs under a plan to localise the workforce in the key economic sector.
“Specialised vocational and technical education is an important investment in the future of young Qataris,” he observed while chairing the 13th annual Qatarisation review meeting of the energy and industry sector yesterday.
The minister noted that some targets were not met as planned due to a heavily competitive job market and the perception of certificates and diplomas versus university degrees.
“This has impacted the intake of Qatari technicians in 2012 despite new measures that were implemented to encourage them to take up technician roles,” Dr al-Sada added.
“What is needed is a greater responsiveness by the educational system to match its deliverables with the vocational and technical needs of the energy market.”
The meeting highlighted the sector’s Qatarisation progress in managing its Qatari human capital strategies in support of the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2011-2016.
The meeting was attended by HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor al-Thani, President of the Qatar Statistics Authority, Professor Sheikha al-Misnad, President of Qatar University and Dr. Mohamed Fathy Saoud, President of Qatar Foundation.
Also present at the event were senior executives and representatives from each of the 41 participating companies, dignitaries from Qatar’s education community and other guests.
In his opening address, Dr al-Sada pointed out that “employers need to look at the changing Qatarisation landscape with an eye to the future.”
“Qatarisation is about quality,” he said. “It is a developmental passion and a commitment to this country and to what it stands for.”
As part of the event, many companies were honoured at the energy and industry sector’s fifth annual Qatarisation awards ceremony.
Awards were presented by the minister to companies that exhibited Qatarisation excellence during 2012.
The recipients of the coveted Qatarisation Crystal Awards for 2012 were Qatargas Operating Company Limited for Support and Liaison with the Education Sector, Qatar Shell GTL Limited for Supporting Qatarisation, Dolphin Energy Limited for Support for Training and Development, Qatar Petrochemical Company Ltd. for Supporting Student Sponsorships, and RasGas Company Limited for Best Qatarisation Progress.
Annual Qatarisation Certificates were also presented to Maersk Oil Qatar for Support and Liaison with the Education Sector, Qatar Aluminium Limited for Supporting Qatarisation, and Qatar International Petroleum Marketing Company for its Support for Training and Development.
