Keeping with the tradition of celebrating World Environment Day (WED) in Qatar for the last six years, IAID, in association with the Friends of the Environment Centre (FEC) under the patronage of Dr. Saif Ali Al Hajari, Chairman of FEC, are set to celebrate the most popular and anticipated painting contest on May 24th and 25th, at the FEC for the 7th consecutive year. With more than 3000 entries expected for this year’s painting contest, organizers of the event are confident that this will surpass the 2300 entries it received last year. “Through this fun and simple contest, we strive to foster a great deal of enthusiasm on environmental education amongst today’s youth, who are the stewards of tomorrow’s economy,” said Dr. Saif Ali Al Hajari, Chairman of FEC The painting contest is open to all age groups, and the theme for this year’s competition has been aptly chosen as, “I love Planet Earth.” Those wishing to participate in the contest can do so by filling up the registration forms at www.iloveqatar.net/wed2013 . Contestants will be given a duration of two hours to complete drawing and coloring of their creative art piece, and will be allowed to use color using any medium. A panel from the Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar will judge the paintings, and the winners will be notified and invited to the closing ceremony on June 7th, where the winning entries will be exhibited. “The response we receive every year to this painting contest shows that children care. It also shows that their teachers, their parents, and their communities care. If we are going to reverse the environmental decline that we know is happening to our land, our seas, our rivers and our air, we all need to care—and to act. So, get those imaginations into gear and see what you can come up with," said Marianne Indrinal Project Manager, WED 2013 The painting contest is one of the many initiatives organized by IAID and FEC to involve the Qatari community in the WED celebrations, and to create interest among the people. The wide variety of activities and contests planned for the WED celebrations will help the citizens become more aware of how they — as individuals — could make a positive impact on the environment. Alongside the Painting Contest is a Seminar related to the WED 2013 world-wide theme - Think.Eat.Save entitled Healthy Eating for a Healthy Planet. This will be facilitated by Ms. Karishma Desai, Nutritionist from IAID. For three years in a row, Al Khalij Commercial Bank (al khaliji) is the Major Sponsor of WED Celebration in Qatar. In addition ORYX GTL Limited, for two years in a row is the event's Diamond Sponsor. This year, Ooredoo has also taken part as the Official Telecom Partner. Last but not the least, Faber-Castell, Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, ILoveQatar.net have been the Event Partners over the years. This year, an addition to the Event Partners consortium are Hemaya Security Services, The Ritz Carlton Doha and Renaissance Doha City Center Hotel.
