A lower criminal court has sentenced a sewer-cleaning worker to three months in jail and fined the contracting company that employed him QR20,000 after they were held responsible for the death of a girl child who had fallen in a sewer manhole in Al Wakra early this year. The court has also asked the worker and his company to organise QR200,000 to be paid as blood money to the family of the deceased. The court ruled that the worker left the manhole open carelessly and did not pay attention that anyone could fall into it, and thus became the cause of the child’s death. The public prosecution had said that there was enough evidence to prove that the girl died because of the ignorance of the worker. He carried out the clean-up and put the lid back on the manhole without realising that a child had fallen into it. The prosecution also said that the contracting company had to also be held responsible according to Qatari law. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/news/qatar/262340/worker-firm-asked-to-pay-blood-money
