Work on Logistics Village to commence in August

Gulf Warehousing Company (GWC) yesterday announced the launch of the Logistics Village Qatar (LVQ). Located at Industrial Area, the much-awaited Logistics Village Qatar will cover an area of 1mn square metres and will be developed in three phases. Construction of the first phase will commence in August 2009 comprising 83,000 square metres of multi-purpose warehouses, 23,200 square metres of accommodation, and associated infrastructure works. The first phase is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2010. The estimated project cost for developing the first phase will be around QR250mn. This facility will be able to accommodate the current and projected future logistics needs of the country. The second and third phases are planned to commence soon after the completion of the first phase. GWC has signed letters of intent with four local companies for building warehouses, accommodation, and high voltage network and sub-stations. The four companies are Al Alia Trading & Contracting, Al Bader Construction & Steel Works, Lexus Engineering & Contracting Co. and Power Action Gulf LLC. GWC also awarded a letter of intent to Gulf Engineering & Industrial Consultancy for providing project management and supervision consultancy services for the first phase of the LVQ development. Speaking at the signing ceremony, GWC chairman Mohamed Ismail al Emadi said: “The awarding of the contract of phase 1 construction is a significant milestone and a major step forward in the development of logistics infrastructure in Qatar. “LVQ will be a one-stop centre for all supply chain and logistics requirements supported by latest technology and managed to best practices. LVQ is poised to fulfil the demands for supply chain expertise and services to meet the needs rising from Qatar’s economic growth rate,” he said. In addition to development of the warehouse infrastructure, LVQ will also develop a container yard, truck repair and maintenance facility, car parking and PDI area, open yard, auction centre, recreational facilities as well as the general administrative building. LVQ will be equipped with advanced IT infrastructure, supported by a team of highly experienced workforce that will take the logistics services in Qatar to new level.
