What About the Art? is an exhibition from 15 contemporary Chinese artists curated by internationally acclaimed New York based Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, presented in the context of Qatar China 2016 Year of Culture. After his solo exhibition at Mathaf in 2011, Cai Guo-Qiang returned to Qatar to present an exhibition featuring 15 contemporary Chinese artists, names below.
Cai Guo-Qiang has devoted three years to the curatorial research and development of the exhibition. Artworks exemplifying each artist’s unique artistic language and methodology are displayed in individual galleries, a curatorial approach further highlighting the distinctive creative pursuit of each individual participant.
The exhibition features sculptures, paintings, installations, videos, performances and interactive video games.
The opening ceremony of the Exhibition was held on the 13th of March at Qatar Museum’s Al Riwaq gallery near the Museum of Islamic Art.
Behind this art you’ll see….
This…
Looks like they forgot to clean up (I am not an artist!) but this is also a part of the art.
The artistic duo Sun Yuan and Peng Yu have installed an 8 meter high and 12 meter large steel tank weighing 40 tons in the middle of a white cube gallery space. At high pressure, a hose sprays the tank, announcing Freedom with vigor. This is definitely one of the ‘must see’ at the Exhibition and it seemed everybody enjoyed seeing the dynamic art and having sprayed a bit themselves. (If you get close to the tank, you’ll get some mist so be careful if you are holding any electronic devices)
Even if you are with your kids, they will not get bored, as there are some games they can play with. Or even a gigantic octopus!
Are you more into paintings?
The Chinese artists explored the North to the south of Qatar as you can see the map below, and they captured the beauty of Qatar and people.
Believe or not, my friend found himself in one of the paintings! You may find yourself or someone you know!
I am not really a person who enjoys art but this exhibition is highly recommended! The exhibition will run until 16 July 2016 at the QM Gallery Al Riwaq.
