The Qatar News Agency (Geneva branch) reported today (March 13, 2019) that Qatar values its strategic partnership with the United Nations and has always worked towards achieving its objectives, including maintaining the international peace and security, supporting international development efforts, promoting and protecting human rights, providing humanitarian relief, and participating in collective efforts and initiatives to address current and emerging challenges facing the world, HE the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva Ambassador Ali Khalfan al-Mansouri has stressed.
In an interview to UN Special Magazine, issued by the UN office in Geneva, HE al-Mansouri, highlighted the pivotal role played by Qatar in solving many of the thorny international issues, reducing tension in international relations and contributing to the maintenance of international peace and security.
He added that since June 2017, Qatar had been subjected to a blockade and unilateral coercive measures by some countries of the region, which contravened the Charter of the United Nations and international law, the peaceful relations between States, and caused numerous and grave violations of human rights.
HE al-Mansouri pointed out that Qatar has lodged complaints against blockade countries with a number of international organisations such as the World Trade Organisation and the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), as well as the International Court of Justice.
On the role played by Qatari women in the renaissance of the country, he stressed that the political leadership in Qatar plays an important role in supporting women in order to achieve equal rights and enhance their status in society, pointing out that one of the strongest women's empowerment advocates in Qatar is Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, who has worked to highlight the important role of Qatari women and encourage them to move forward with social responsibilities and to participate in public life.
HE al-Mansouri also pointed out that Qatar has achieved many of the goals of sustainable development 2030, in many areas including infrastructure and urban development and its effects on health and education, as well as finishing many projects in the sectors of energy, water and electricity, and protecting the environment, stressing that the country has spared no effort in providing humanitarian and development assistance and fulfilling its international obligations in many regions of the world without any discrimination.
He also stressed that this year will witness a qualitative leap in the strategic partnership between Qatar and the UN as historic agreements have been signed between the two countries and Qatar has provided a financial contribution of $500mn over several years to support and finance the work of a number of humanitarian organisations, and Doha is also preparing to be home to a number of major international organisations and UN institutions and bodies.
