THE Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) will organise major events for celebrating the National Sports Day (NSD) on February 14. The unique initiative will makeQatarthe first country in the world to have a dedicated national holiday for sports, on the second Tuesday of the second month of the year. Two walkathons — along the Doha Corniche and inside ASPIRE Park — will be organised. The latter will be open only to women and children. Both events will start at 9am and will have no entry fees. Similar events will also be held in other cities ofQatar, with different sports clubs co-ordinating them. On the National Sports Day, the public can make use of the QOC’s facilities including sports stadiums and grounds and indoor halls, all free of charge. The QOC is set to launch a dedicated website that will act as a one-stop shop for all activities related to the NSD. “From the site, people can learn what activities are on, when and where. Individuals and institutions can register themselves for our programmes. We’ll also start a call centre, based at the QOC headquarters, which will co-ordinate the various activities for the day,” said QOC’s Sport Affairs Director Khaleel Al Jabir. Different national sports icons, including ace skeet shooter and rally driver Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah, will also take active part in the NSD celebrations.
