More than 100 people participated at the ‘walk–a-thon’ held on the Corniche, as a part of the ongoing Sport For All festival organised by the Qatar Olympic Committee, yesterday. Men and women from GCC countries and local invitees gathered on the Corniche for the walk, which started near the Doha Sheraton end. The participants walked 2km as a symbol of friendship and brotherhood. “We organised this walk for people to get to know each other and build new relationships with others in the GCC countries and strengthen the brotherhood,” said Thariq Al Abdullah, General Secretary, Sport For All, organising committee. The event was also aimed at encouraging and supporting the development of sport activities through all generations. “We invited people from all age groups. There is no competition. Each participant is a winner,” Thariq said. Qatar Olympic Committee is committed to providing opportunities for all in the community to participate in sports and sports-related activities that contribute to the physical and spiritual health of individuals and communities in Qatar and around the world, he added. The participants sang songs and cheered before and after the walk showcasing their happiness and companionship. They were presented with T-shirts as a remembrance of the walk. The annual ‘GCC Sport For All’ festival commenced on Monday at the Al Sadd Sports Club’s indoor hall, with the theme ‘spread sport for all philosophy,’ organised by the Qatar Olympic Committee. The four-day event is scheduled to end tomorrow. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=February2009&file=Local_News200902041282.xml
