In a major development, Vodafone Qatar, a new entrant into the Qatari market, has beaten the well-entrenched local communications giant, Qatar Telecom (Qtel) in the game of numbers as it has made more subscribers in the last one year than its rival. Kuwait-based Global Investment House said in a report released recently that Qtel’s subscribers grew only 0.2 percent in number during the second quarter of this year. In contrast, Vodafone Qatar witnessed 15 percent growth in its subscription base during the same period. Vodafone Qatar made 69,535 new subscribers during this period, while Qtel could add barely 4,544 new subscribers in this period putting up a poor show. Vodafone Qatar increased its subscriptions by 0.8 percent in the second quarter of 2009 but the growth was a massive 19.9 percent a year hence, in the second quarter of 2010. According to the Global report, the second quarter of 2010 has seen 2.8 percent growth in the number of mobile phone subscribers in the country as compared to the first quarter. The report further said that until the second quarter (April to June) of this year there were a total of 2.69 million mobile phone subscribers in Qatar. The annual growth in the number of mobile phone subscribers has been 38.8 percent. http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/qatar/125489-vodafone-beats-qtel-at-numbers-game.html
