A video published through social media showing crowded accommodation for domestic workers was made by a disgruntled employee for the purpose of blackmailing the employment agency, the Labour Ministry clarified in a statement.

“The domestic workers' accommodation shown in the video published in social media belongs to one of the licensed recruitment agencies in Qatar,” the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour & Social Affairs said.

After inspection by the ministry officials, it was found that there are two separate accommodations — one for the domestic workers returned to the agency and the other for new arrivals in Qatar.

“A technical failure in the electric supply system led to a power outage in the building, which accommodated returned domestic workers. Due to this emergency, they were moved temporarily to the other building till electricity was restored. This caused crowding in the building for a few hours,” ministry explained in its statement.

Meanwhile, one of the domestic workers, who was being sent back home as she didn't clear the medical check-up, started filming the accommodation for blackmailing the agency to prevent it from sending her back to her country.

She published the video on social media. On arrival in her country, she was contacted by the Philippines recruitment agency, which has a contract with the Qatari Recruitment agency. She confessed to her mistake and wrongdoing. She apologised for her actions that distorted the truth and for spreading a wrong picture of what really happened.

“It should be taken into consideration that the ministry conducts inspections at the recruitment agencies and their accommodations to ensure that they comply with the provisions of the Labour Law and enforced its decisions,” the ministry added in its statement.
