A Kuwaiti has been sentenced to three years’ jail after he was found guilty of attacking Qatar Airways staff during a flight from Doha to Bangkok last summer. The court also ordered that he be lashed 40 times for drinking alcohol onboard the plane in the July 11, 2008 incident. Two stewards explained in separate testimonies in the court, how they failed to control the 36-year-old, even after restraining him with a safety belt. One of the stewards said the convict punched him on the nose, while the other testified that he was bitten in the neck and scratched in the face. The aircraft captain said he had to make an unscheduled stop for almost three hours in Mumbai, where the convict was removed. The Indian authorities later sent him to Doha. The court dismissed the defence lawyer’s claims of “contradictions” in the stewards’ statements to the police, the public prosecution and in the courtroom. Presiding Judge Mamon Hamour said minor differences in statement do not affect the overall picture of the incident. The convict is appealing the decision in a higher court http://gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=302191&version=1&template_id=36&parent_id=16
