New York: The UN Security Council has welcomed and supported the mediation efforts undertaken by Qatar under the auspices of the Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to resolve the border dispute between Djibouti and Eritrea. “The Security Council members welcome and fully support the mediation efforts undertaken by the State of Qatar under the auspices of the Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the effort that aimed at resolving the border dispute between Djibouti and Eritrea. The members also welcome the signing of an agreement and an instrument of its implementation in which leaders of both countries entrusted the Emir of Qatar with the mediation efforts,” said a statement issued by the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the UN, Ambassador Claude Heller, whose country holds the rotating Council presidency this month. “The members of the Security Council attach great importance to the resolution of the border dispute and to the normalisation of relations between the two countries for overall stability and security in the region,” the statement added.
