Qatar Museums is marking
Qatar’s one-year anniversary of the blockade with the unveiling of two public
art installations at Al-Riwaq Gallery and the Fire Station as reported by The Peninsula. The installations commemorate
the unity showed by the people living in Qatar after the blockade and the
conviction that Qatar can and will sustain itself.
The first installation is by the British artist Martin Creed and can be seen on the Al-Riwaq façade. It reads ‘Everything is Going to be Alright’ and is written in big, bold LED letters that are visible from a distance. The idea behind the installation is to reassure the people of Qatar that this time will pass and, at the end of the day, everything will be alright. This installation was originally executed in Hackney in 1999 as a temporary commission and is one of the late 20th century’s best post-conceptualistic pieces of art.

The second installation is by political ARToonist Ghada Al-Khater who is well-known for her comical interpretation of the blockade. Her installation is the Arabic reply to “Everything is Going to be Alright”. It is visible on the Fire Station as the statement “A Blessing in Disguise” written in a big, bold Arabic font and is a reminder to the people of Qatar, that the blockade has made us stronger. This statement was used by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in his historical speech on 21st July, 2017, when he made his first speech to the people of Qatar after the blockade started and has become a kind of slogan for the blockade since.
These two temporary installations show hope. They are encouraging and reassuring and a reminder that Qatar is united, Qatar is strong!
