MORE than five hundred children and parents attended an operetta organised by Dhreima Qatar Orphan Foundation as part of its Garangao celebration in Qatar National Theatre on Wednesday. Qatar’s heritage came alive through the play which depicted the customs and tradition associated with Garangao. Twenty children from the Dhreima Friends Club participated in the operetta and various other activities which were lined up for the programme. The actors worked for two months to prepare for the play under the supervision of Film Director Mohamed Abdul Wahid. Talking to Qatar Tribune, Wahid said, “I am honoured to be part of this programme. I very much enjoyed directing the play and working with the smart, talented kids who made the team for the play. The play presented an opportunity to peep into Qatar’s wonderful past and recall beautiful memories from old days to share them with the young generation. It is a way to preserve our heritage and to connect our past with our present for a better future.” Al Jazeera Children’s Channel assisted in facilitating the celebration by providing more than 500 gifts that were distributed among the children who attended the event. Khalid Kamal al Emadi, director-general of Dhreima, said “Qatar heritage came alive through this play. We are happy to present our heritage to our kids during the Holy Month of Ramadan. It is an opportunity to encourage talented Dhreima kids and their friends as well as to discover and highlight their creativity which is one of the noble goals of our institution.” Celebrating Garanao has been a tradition at Dhreima for six years. Dhreima, a charity organisation set up through Qatar Foundation, is dedicated to the service and well being of orphaned children in the country.
