Good supply of quality desert truffles has helped to bring their prices down at the Omani Market in Abu Hamour Area, local daily Arrayah reported on Friday.

Some 650 boxes of different varieties of truffle were recently on auction at the market with the prices ranging from QR1,200 to QR4,000 for a box of around 8kg of Zubidi truffles depending on the variety. A box of the same quantity of Khalass truffle was sold for around QR500-600.

Traders at the market said the desert truffles came from different countries, including Morocco and Algeria.

They pointed out that the prices have fallen considerably this year as compared to last year, and expect prices to drop further in the coming weeks.

However, the good turnout of GCC customers, mostly from Saudi Arabia, at the daily auction at the market helped to keep prices at reasonable level, hindering further fall.

The season for desert truffles continues until April and the traders expect more stocks in Doha in the coming weeks.
