The Public Works Authority — Ashghal — has announced a traffic diversion on the main arterial road that links Doha and Al Wakra, partially effective from tomorrow.

It will extend from Barwa Village interchange to Al Wakra roundabout north of Al Wakra.

The diversion is for implementation of main construction works for Ashghal and Qatar Rail.

It will facilitate construction works of the Doha Metro project (The Red Line South Elevated and at-grade) implemented by Qatar Rail and allow construction works of Interchange No. 27, one of four interchanges that will be built as part of the East Corridor Expressway project implemented by Ashghal.

The main road, with three lanes in each direction, will be closed and diverted to a temporary, alternative road with the same number of lanes in each direction. A traffic light has also been installed to facilitate traffic from and to Ras Abu Funtas Road.

The traffic diversion will be implemented in two phases; the diversion will be first open at the Southbound towards Al Wakra starting from tomorrow.

It will then be open towards Doha on Wednesday from April 8. The traffic diversion will be open in both directions from April 8 until the fourth quarter of next year. The left lane (fast lane) of the main road towards Al Wakra will open today to facilitate the opening of the temporary road for the new diversion.

Ashghal and Qatar Rail have assessed current traffic to develop the best alternative routes and reduce the impact of the diversion on traffic flow, said a statement yesterday.

Meanwhile, Ashghal announced a temporary closure on one lane of Najma Street for 90 days from tomorrow.

The closure will be between Al Hilal and Abha streets and Ibn Shuaib and Nawfal bin Al Hareth streets.

Ashghal said the closure is part of works to develop the existing sewerage network in Najma.

People driving on Al Hilal Street towards Najma Street must use the second lane of Najma Street which will remain open throughout the work.

Motorists coming from Al Mansoora Street towards Al Hilal and Abha streets must take a right turn on Nawfal bin Al Hareth Street, then take a left on Salim bin Al Hareth Street and finally take another left turn to reach Abha Street. Ashghal will also close Bin Al Hareth Street as part of development works and motorists coming from Al Hilal Street must take a right turn before they reach Bin Al Hareth Street and take the open lanes to reach their destinations.
