The mercury level is increasing day-by-day, but the good news is that you’ve made it through half of the Doha summer! ILQ has some summer safety tips for you, so that you can stay cool and be safe!

#1 Hydration is key.

Make water your best friend. Keep your yourself hydrated in order to escape the Doha heat. If you would like to upgrade from plain, regular water you can add fresh fruits and herbs to make it flavoured. Water helps keep the muscles and bones healthy, helps you maintain a healthy weight and helps fuel your body activity throughout the day.

#2 Light colours for a breezy summer.

Wearing light-coloured clothes in the summertime is a great way to keep cool. Light/white coloured clothing reflects the sunlight and keeps out the heat. Wearing tops with longer sleeves protects your skin from the direct heat as well. If you wear loose cotton clothes, which enables easy ventilation, you’ll maintain your body temperature be more comfortable. Avoid synthetic fabrics or silk, satin, etc.

#3 Cool ride, cooler journey.

In Doha, our vehicles are basically our second homes. You should park your cars in shaded areas or underground parking lots to keep the interior cool. Using a windshield sun protector can help prevent steering wheels and seatbelts from getting too hot. In case you have to park in the sun for a long period, keep your windows slightly open to get rid of all the heat trapped in your car. Don’t drink water from bottles that you’ve left in your car, as it can be toxic if left in the sun or heat. Avoid leaving children in the car even with the AC as its not safe due to the heat.

#4 Always apply Sunscreen!

It’s very important to use sunscreen of at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Don’t sit in the sun during the peak hours in order to minimize UV radiation. If you do plan on spending time in the sun don’t forget to wear your hats, sunglasses and reapply your sunscreen every 2-3 hours.

#5 Help out our furry little friends.

This tip is for our furry friends. As Doha is home to many stray cats and migrating birds, keep a bowl of water outside your windows or houses to make summer cooler for our favorite fauna as well! If you have pets and you’re taking them for a drive, don’t leave them in the car unattended as they can suffocate from the heat!
