Three young men have landed in jail for stealing a petty sum of QR135 from a victim. The criminal court which heard the case sentenced them to two years in jail. The presiding judge of the court said in his verdict that rigorous punishment was being meted out to the trio since their crime was serious as they lied and posed as policemen, aside from involved in a theft. “Let this verdict act as a deterrent so that others do not show the courage to commit such types of offense,” said the presiding judge. It so happened that the convict entered into an office late one night presuming that since the lights inside were on someone should be in. They were all riding motorcycles. A man indeed was present in doing some extra office work. The trio told him that they were policemen and wanted to search his wallet. They asked him to surrender his identity (ID) card and raise his hands. The victim, thinking that they really were policemen in plain clothes, followed their instructions. But the trio was disappointed to discover that he had only QR135 in his wallet. They nevertheless took the cash and disappeared. The victim immediately realised that they were fake policemen since if they were genuine they would not leave taking petty cash away. He went to the police and lodged a complaint. A manhunt was lodged and the cops eventually succeeded in zeroing in on the trio. The police called the victim and paraded several suspects before him and asked him to identify the trio who had stolen cash from him. The man immediately pointed to them. The trio was arrested and referred to the prosecution. They were put on trial with the victim becoming the prime witness in the case. Taking a very serious view of the crime, the presiding judge sentenced them to two years in prison. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=June2009&file=Local_News2009062713735.xml
