The criminal court has sentenced three Iranian nationals to life imprisonment and a fine of QR300,000 each, for smuggling and possession and distribution of narcotics in the country. Details of the case go back to May last year when officers at the drug prevention department received the information that a group plans to smuggle in narcotics from a nearby country. Officers came to know that the group is being helped by a number of people. The officials were notified that the shipment was to be transported by boat which would be docking in the Ras Nouf area. On the basis of the information, the officers reached the area. While one of the smugglers was captured with the drugs stashed inside the boat, the other managed to escape. The accused confessed in custody that he and his accomplice were peddling drugs to three other people inside the country. They had planned to sell the narcotics for over QR260,000. At the court hearings, only the first accused was present, while the rest did not turn up in spite of being legally notified. The first accused was given a life sentence and fined QR300,000. The others were sentenced in absentia. The court said that the judgement was deliverd keeping in mind the increased number of drug trafficking cases in the country and within the region. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=August2009&file=Local_News2009082633246.xml
