2 September 2016 – Doha, Qatar: Considered as the touchstone for young male cyclists, the Tour de l’Avenir was held in France last week. It is regarded as the reference point for the Men’s Under 23 races of the upcoming UCI Road World Championships – Doha 2016, and several prospects shone during this weeklong stage race, won overall by French climber David Gaudu.
However, being a light rider, Gaudu is not best suited to the flat roads of Doha, which will favour heavier, more powerful cyclists. Adrien Costa (1997, Stanford) falls in this category. The American cyclist placed third in the overall classification after brilliantly winning the individual time trial stage.
Born in California to French parents, Costa is currently considered the most promising GT-rider in the world. Outstandingly mature, he spends half of the year taking classes at the Oregon State University and the other half based in Europe, the mainland of cycling, where he competes and evolves as a cyclist.
With a lanky build, his main ability when it comes to racing is time-trialling. Costa has been runner-up in the Junior ITT race in both the previous two UCI Road World Championships.
That’s why Costa has unresolved business to finish in Doha. He will be aiming to finish one spot better and prove third time’s a charm on the Men’s Under 23 ITT.
His main rivals in this event, to be held on 10 October in Doha, will be fellow American Neilson Powless, Denmark’s Mads Würtz Schmidt, Italiy’s Filippo Ganna and Germany’s Lennard Kamna, who already owns two rainbow jerseys.
