Qumra Film Festival talks — Sunday-Tuesday

The Qumra Film Festival has kicked off this week with the screening of fantastic films! Not only are there screenings, but there will also be exclusive talks with some of the film industry’s bigwigs, such as Mike Reiss one of the lead screenwriters on the Simpsons. In conjunction with Northwestern University in Qatar, Qumra Talks offers new perspectives into areas that are redefining the film and media industry.

Here are some of the talks that will be taking place during the week:

Qumra Talks 1: International Digital Distribution and Marketing

On March 5, Under the Milky Way CEO Pierre Alexandre Labelle, Front Row Filmed Entertainment Managing Director Gianluca Chakra, and Iflix Head of Middle East and North Africa Nader Sobhan will mark the first Qumra Talk on ‘International Distribution and Marketing.’ Panellists will offer their take on the direction of the digital film distribution value chain and how independent producers can best use emerging platforms to both finance productions and recoup on their investment.

Qumra Talks 2: Writing and Producing Animation with Mike Reiss (‘The Simpsons’)

Mike Reiss, acclaimed American television comedy writer and producer, who has won four Emmys writing for The Simpsons, will take centre stage on March 6, as he discusses ‘Writing and Production Animation.’ Contributing writer to two dozen animated films, including Ice Age, King Fu Panda and Despicable Me, he will take the audience through his career, describing lessons learned along the way and demonstrating how all those skills come together in The Simpsons, in a lively class featuring rare animated clips.

Qumra Talks 3: Al Jazeera’s Strategic Pivot to Digital

On March 7, join the Qumra Talk on ‘Al Jazeera’s Strategic Pivot to Digital.’ This panel will explore how Al Jazeera conceived and implemented a long term strategic pivot from a traditional media organization to a digital first media brand, including the launch of a digital division, the establishment of a product innovation and development practice and the cultivation of a risk-taking culture.

Qumra Film Festival screenings — Sunday-Wednesday

The Qumra Film Festival has a lineup of films set to be screened this week! Check out some of the films that are showing at the Museum of Islamic Art below.

March 5, 7:30 pm - The Missing Picture (L' Image manquante):



The film employs an almost astonishing device to describe the horrors of life for prisoners under the Khmer Rouge: painstakingly handcrafted miniature human figures that are used in tableaux of the various scenes the film descibes. Combined with archival footage of films from Cambodia’s golden age of filmmaking as well as documentary examples of the emptied capital city and forced labour in work camps, these toylike figures are disarming in that they are somehow endearing, even as they act out the gut-wrenching scenes of inhumanity the regime’s many victims were made to endure.


March 6, 7:00 pm - About Elly (Darbareye Elly):

The film’s title is, appropriately, both enigmatic and something of a double entendre. Elly, who is the unknown, new friend among the group, occupies the centre of the narrative (to define exactly why is to spoil the narrative): she is by definition the primary character. And yet, the others revolve about her, never quite able to ascertain who she is. ‘About Elly’ is a deeply incisive and moving look at the failings and foibles of human nature.


March 7, 7:00 pm - La Ciénaga:



Grounded in a precise script, wonderful cinematography, a brilliant use of sound and riveting performances, ‘La Ciénaga’ simmers with claustrophobic dread as it moves inexorably forward to its shocking conclusion. With her award-winning debut feature, Lucrecia Martel provides scathing social commentary at its best.



March 8, 8:00 pm - Mimosas:

Bordering on the surreal, ‘Mimosas’ travels deeper and deeper into the mountain range, seeming to dislocate itself in time and becoming an inner journey of endurance, passion and will. The duty-bound men are increasingly focused on their goal to the extent that it becomes a moral mission; one by one they face their doubts and fears, gaining strength from hardship and faith from failure.

Ladies Training Days at Losail International Circuit — Tuesday

Starting from today, Losail International Circuit will be hosting Ladies Training Days.

Twice a month, the Losail track will be open only for ladies to be able to exercise in one of the largest venues in Doha with privacy as well as enjoy a variety of outdoor activities.

Bicycles and gear will be available so ladies won’t have to bring their personal cycles from home. There will be special trainers available to provide yoga lessons, a mini-bootcamp; walking, jogging and other activities, as well as a special allocated area for children.

*Please note only boys under 9 years of age will be allowed inside the track.*

A small rental fee will be charged starting from 7th March
