A resident was caught by the police on Saturday, as he was trying to run away after stealing jewellery worth about QR9,000 from a shop in the Gold Souq. The incident occurred when a firefighting operation was going on near the souq that helped the culprit divert attention of the shopkeepers. The area was, however, surrounded by the police who was assisting the firefighting team. The thief, who is in his 20s, entered the shop and started asking the prices of various ornaments, pretending as a customer. He selected two gold necklaces and told the salesman that he should call a friend who would come and pay the money. It was only trick to reach the door and run away. The shopkeeper tried to catch him but in vain. The culprit was not fortunate enough as the area was surrounded by policemen. They spotted him as he was trying to cross the road. The police gave a brief chase and took the man into custody, along with the booty. Each piece of the stolen jewellery was worth QR4,500, according to the shopkeeper. The accused was later taken to the police station for further investigation. The Peninsula
