His spritely grin and scathing political wit have been filling our screens for more than a year now. Not just anyone could take the reins from Daily Show legend Jon Stewart, but South Africa’s Trevor Noah beat them all to the punch. Now, the 32-year-old comedy icon is coming to Doha for the first time to headline the upcoming Doha Comedy Festival (DCF), organized and produced by Qatar’s very own The Social Studio as part of the Qatar Tourism Authority’s (QTA) Shop Qatar Festival.
The three-day comedy event will be held at the Qatar National Convention Centre from February 2-4, 2017 and will feature a top-notch line-up of 15 stand-up comedians from nine countries. Joining headliner Trevor Noah will be America’s Got Talent winner, comedian and ventriloquist Paul Zerdin, who will close out the festival alongside Noah, with a performance on its International Night on February 4, 2017.
Kicking off the stand-up series on February 2, 2017 will be an Arabic Night, the begins with some of the best comedic talent from the Arab world, as Jordan’s Raiae Qawas, Syria’s Mohanad Al-Hattab, and Egypt’s Mohammad Salem grace the stage alongside even more talent.
Then it’s a nod to the Gulf on February 3, 2017 with GCC comedians bringing the laughs on the festival’s Khaleeji Night. Laugh to the likes of Saudia Arabia’s Bader Saleh and Ibraheem Al-Khairallah, and Kuwait’s Bashar Al-Jazzaf – plus our very own Qatari Guy Hamad Al-Amari!
The last edition of DCF was held during the Qatar Summer Festival and drew more than 4,000 fans to its roster of performances. Tickets for this year’s line-up range from QR 120 to QR 995 and are on-sale now online and in-store at Virgin Megastore, and at Shop Qatar booths located throughout participating malls.
Visitors traveling to Qatar will have an opportunity to experience a full festival package as part of the Shop Qatar experience, as the QTA has partnered with Qatar Airways for a promotion of a 25% discount on flights to Qatar booked between January 7 and February 7, 2017. While their Qatar Airways’ Privilege Club members will receive double their Q-Miles on bookings made during Shop Qatar.
It’s not all just fun and games however. Events such as the DCF and Shop Qatar serve a dual purpose of bringing Qatar and all it offers in terms of consumer tourism and entertainment to a larger global audience.
“The last edition of DCF featured a number of top comedians from the region, and the great audience turn-out underscored the importance of stand-up comedy in our region’s cultural scene,” says local Qatari comedian Hamad Al-Amari. “The winter edition promises to build on that and offer our audiences a new experience with fresh material that touches on new topics. We are particularly excited to be sharing the stage with world-renowned comedians, who will be coming to Qatar for the first time, as well as a host of Khaleeji and Arab talent.”
