The 4th Qatar Japanese Speech Contest
The Embassy of Japan and the Japanese Language Teachers’ Association in Qatar in cooperation with the Qatar Museums Authority and Museum of Islamic Art organized the 4th Qatar Japanese Speech Contest for those who are studying Japanese language in Qatar on 16 June, 2012. H.E. Mr. Kenjiro Monji, Ambassador of Japan and officials from the government as well as a number of students and members of Japanese Community in Qatar attended the contest.
This year’s speech contest is held as part of the Qatar Japan 2012 project to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Japan-Qatar diplomatic relations. Japan and Qatar have been strengthening its bilateral relations in many fields and this speech contest shows that many people are now learning Japanese in Qatar.
Ambassador Mr. Kenjiro Monji said in his speech “Learning other languages is about knowing other cultures. And it is one of the most effective means to enhance the friendship and understanding among peoples. The participants in today’s contest are friends of Japan and I am sure that you would be able to play an important role in bridging your respective countries and Japan in the future.”
20 speakers delivered speeches in Japanese and demonstrated fruits of their hard work. The contest consisted of three Categories; Assigned Topic, Assigned Theme and Free Topic. The following list is the winners. The winners were awarded with a number of prizes by Qatar Airways, 51 East, Midori Sushi, Qatar Eastern Language Center, Mitsui O.S.K Lines, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, and Mitsubishi Corporation.
Category A (Assigned Topic):
1St Place (digital video camera donated by 51 East), Ms. Sonam Choden
2nd Place (dining voucher donated by Midori Sushi), Ms. Fatma Al-Bouainain
3rd Place (Ukiyo-e print and Japanese tea cup donated by Mitsui O.S.K Lines), Ms. Al Anoud Al-Thani
Category B (Assigned Theme):
1st Place (class voucher donated by Qatar Eastern Language Center), Ms. Hessa Al-Nasf
2nd Place (dining voucher donated by Midori Sushi), Ms. Hessa Al-Sulaiti
3rd Place (Arita ceramic tea bowl set donated by Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ), Ms. Aisha Al-Sumaiti
Category C (Free Topic):
1st Place (one round-trip ticket to Japan donated by Qatar Airways), Ms. Al Anoud Al-Hajri
2nd Place (dining voucher donated by Midori Sushi), Ms. Safia Al-Hajri
3rd Place (Heian Beauty print and Japanese goods donated by Mitsui O.S.K Lines), Ms. Noura Al-Naimi
This contest strengthened the motivation for learning Japanese language among those who are studying it in Qatar and broadened the network of Japanese learners and the Japanese community. It also provided a great occasion for all participants and audience to exchange their views about Japan.
