Stunt bikers, FMX daredevils and drifters stunned the crowd at the 2012 Qatar Motor Show yesterday with gravity defying jumps and high speed skids leaving trails of tyre smoke sailing across the track.
Drifters Abdo Feghali and Marco Giony, stunt biker Chris Pfeiffer and FMX motocross bikers Nick Franklin, Nick De Wit and Fredrik Berggren came to Qatar to show off their skills for hundreds of fans and spectators gathered for the special outdoor event at the Doha Exhibition Centre.
Before the show began, Feghali told the Gulf Times that motor sport is in his blood as he comes from a family of race car drivers, starting his career as a rally driver in 1998 at the age of 20. A Lebanese Rally and Hill Climb champion and four-time Middle East Hill Climb champion, he started drifting with his Red Bull team in 2008. “It was a new idea in the Middle East because drifting didn’t exist here before. Drifting is all about the thrill, the car control, exciting the fans and the tyre smoke. First we did it locally in Lebanon, and then we decided to go regionally, and that’s what we’ve been doing since 2010, and year by year it’s getting bigger and bigger. We started last year with Qatar Motor Show as a test for us and for them to see if this will attract some crowds and everyone went crazy. That’s why we’re doing it this year even bigger and with more stunt riders, with the FMX riders and some other stuff so I hope we’re all going to enjoy the event.”
The specially-built outdoor asphalt track is spread over nearly 7,000sqm. The spectator’s area has a capacity of 1,500.
The outdoor activities also involve winners of the social media campaign that the organisers of the 2012 Qatar Motor Show ran in the lead up to the event on Twitter and Facebook. Visitors also had the chance to test drive their favorite vehicles in an adjacent test-drive area.
Organised by Qatar Tourism Authority, in partnership with Q.media Events and GL Events, the 2012 Qatar Motor Show is hosting the latest cars, concept cars, classic cars, motor bikes, and car service providers.
The event runs from 4pm to 10pm today, while admissions on the weekend are from 1pm to 10pm.
