A number of citizens have called for strict monitoring against beggars in malls, mosques and markets in order to curtail the phenomenon which is on the rise, local daily Arrayah has reported. Some people make bogus claims that they are collecting aid for the Syrian people while others call up citizens from random telephone numbers in the guise of charity officials and request transfer of money. Many citizens complained of receiving messages on “WhatsApp” from unknown numbers calling for donation of money and aid in kind for Syrians. The message specifies places where cars “owned by charity societies are waiting to collect donations”. Many citizens and residents went to such locations carrying aid materials, the daily said. Some citizens said that there were many women beggars who knocked on the doors and refused to leave unless they received money. One citizen was quoted as saying that begging seemed to have become a “profession” for some persons “who are swindling money which should go to the needy.” The daily said that some people wait at traffic signals to beg from passing drivers. http://www.gulf-times.com/qatar/178/details/377364/strict-action-against-beggars-demanded
