Our newest feature segment, “Startup of the week” highlights Qatar’s most innovative, unique, and impactful startups every week. Startups are great contributors to a nation's economy and business industry. Modesty is an important aspect of Ramadan. Women tend to dress more conservatively and for comfort, often wearing cultural garments at gatherings for Iftar and Suhour. Maqdeem, a new ready-to-wear fashion label, creates affordable luxury garments that combine modern style, comfort, and local culture. It's a great brand to check out for Ramadan, and for regular wear too!

Maqdeem was founded in 2015 by Qatari entrepreneur Maqdeem Al Naama. The name Maqdeem refers to a Sinbook, an iconic traditional dhow from the region that has embarked on numerous journeys across uncharted waters. The name is meant to represent the modern day woman, who journeys forward while still holding on to her roots and cultural heritage.

“I wanted to establish a brand that was high quality and still good value. I was always inspired by art and design and wanted more creative options for the Qatari Abaya market,” Al Naama said. “After receiving oodles of compliments on my personally designed Abayas I decided to start a custom high quality women's wear brand.”

Al Naama started Maqdeem shortly after graduating from university, with the support of her family and friends. Her label currently includes abayas and kaftans, but plans to expand to regular attire in the future.
