In a first in the country, Villaggio Mall has introduced smart parking lots to address the shortage of parking space.
The service was launched a week ago as a pilot project and will be expanded to other areas in Qatar depending on its success, Mohammed Magdy, Senior Sales Manager at My City Technical Solutions (MCTS), who provided technical support for the project, told this daily.
It will be available for the public free of charge for six months, he added. MCTS is a specialised company providing smart parking solutions and clean energy technology.
“With smart parking your parking areas are expanded by up to eight times… Parking from eight to 16 cars in the space of approximately two cars” said a post on the company’s website.
The company explained that “on a larger scale in a parking space of only 13 cars it can park (bare) up to 100 cars”.
The project has been implemented on agreement made with Villaggio.
MCTS installed smart parking lots in Villaggio and checked security and safety requirements, including the possibility of manual use in case of outage, the ministry said on its website. The smart parking is made of iron structure which can rotate clockwise or anti-clockwise. Each parking takes six to 16 salon cars or 12 four-wheel cars on an area of around 30sqm, suitable for areas suffering from lack of enough parking space such as commercial complexes.
A technical team trained in Korea will run smart parking lots, available for the public for free for six months based on an agreement with Villaggio, said Magdy.
The facility made in Korea is the first of its kind in Qatar and installation took five days, he added.
“People are still not familiar with this type of parking. They come to see it and our team explains its advantages, including safety and security. It is easy to use,” said the official. If found effective and suitable for the Qatari environment, then the company will expand the service to more places and accommodate different types of vehicles, he added.
