Hundreds of Corniche visitors savoured a medley of popular street food and snacks as they enjoyed a ten-minute spectacular pyrotechnic display last night as part of the month-long inaugural Shop Qatar Festival.
From pani puri to burgers to churros to Turkish ice cream, 17 food trucks, carts and kiosks set up near the Orry statue are offering a variety of food from 4.30pm till 10.30pm until tomorrow as a highlight of the festival organised by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) to promote the retail sector.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the event, Rashed Al Qurese, QTA’s Chief Marketing and Promotions Officer, highlighted that the three-day activities on the Corniche is one in a variety of offerings tailored to the public throughout the festival’s run.
“What we try to do is to create different activities throughout the month focusing on intensifying the retail with the growing number of malls in Qatar as well as providing different options for the entire family and what we have started on the Corniche today is one of them,” explained Al Qurese.
The QTA has partnered with Bedaya Centre to provide opportunity for local entrepreneurs engaged in food business to showcase their products as well as food truck companies which are growing in the market, he added.
The first food truck in Doha, Burgeri — a Qatari brand inspired by the vintage American diner – was one of the crowd-pullers for their scrumptious burgers, hotdogs and fries among other food they offer. This was not the first time food trucks have been featured in a QTA-led festival. They were also part of last year’s edition of Qatar International Food Festival and will again be included in the forthcoming food festival, noted Al Qurese.
A gigantic screen has been set up at the venue showing episodes of Siraj, Qatar Foundation’s new 3D animation ‘edutainment’ TV series. Four 30-minute screenings are scheduled at 6:30pm, 7:30pm, 8:30pm and 9:30pm.
Entertainment also includes music parades and Ardha dance, among others. Fireworks display will again take place at 8pm tonight and tomorrow night.
Music concerts, comedy shows and the Broadway musical CATS are among the upcoming entertainment events in the festival schedule.
Under the slogan ‘A Brand New Tradition’, Shop Qatar runs until February 7, offering residents and visitors discounts on popular brands, access to local designer products through an array of pop-up shops, and raffle draws with cash prizes worth QR4m.
Retail partners include Mall of Qatar, Ezdan Mall, Hyatt Plaza, AlKhor Mall, Lagoona Mall, Gulf Mall, Landmark, Dar Al Salam Mall, The Gate and The Pearl-Qatar – where visitors can enjoy discounts of up to 50 per cent on a range of goods. (Source)
