With the Supreme Education Council (SEC) instructing all private schools to strictly follow the country’s unified holiday schedule, the winter break at Indian schools may change from the next academic year.
The SEC has asked all private schools to announce at least a week’s holiday either in the last week of January or the first week of February from the next academic year to comply with the two-week spring holidays of Independent schools. Accordingly, most Indian schools have a holiday in the last week of this month.
For many years, these schools have been scheduling their winter holidays in December. This year, the winter break has been split between two months, since most schools have already given at least two-week holidays in December.
“Last year, the Indian schools were exempted from the SEC rule (regarding spring holidays). This time, the SEC has asked us to strictly follow the unified schedule. If this continues in the coming years, Indian schools will be forced to change their winter holidays from December to January,” said a senior official of the Shantiniketan Indian school.
He said, to adjust with the new schedule, the school had cut the December holidays to less than a week. “Our academic calendar is different from the Independent schools and international schools and we would face some problems with the new schedule. We will bring this issue to the notice of the SEC authorities once again,” said the official. Principals of all Indian schools here are currently in India attending a meeting organised by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to which the schools are affiliated to. A decision is expected to be taken after they come back. If the holidays come split between December and January, as this time, it could upset many family holidays.
A source at the Ideal Indian school hinted that the school has taken a decision to change the winter holidays from December to January from next year.
