The Department of Traffic and Patrols jointly with International Bank of Qatar (IBQ) is organising a series of events at secondary schools to create awareness among students about road safety. The events are part of the national campaign against traffic accidents. This new phase of the campaign will see visits to high schools by Traffic department officials and other community representatives who will conduct awareness programmes on road safety, and the importance of reducing traffic accidents. Over the next couple of months, students will take part in a range of educational programmes and talks about road safety, as well as field visits to the Traffic Department and to road accident victims at Rumailah Hospital. Competitions for research projects and designing awareness messages and images will be held for students. . Brig Mohamed Saad Kharji, director of the Traffic Department, said, “the aim of this campaign is to promote good driving habits and raise awareness among the youth, the most important segment of our society. Our campaign specifically targets this group. I would like to recognise the contributions of the traffic department working with various community groups in achieving safety on our streets. We are hopeful that the campaign will achieve its aim of developing a generation that is more aware and shows respect for the rules of the road. ” “IBQ’s sponsorship and support for these awareness programmes should go a long way to having a positive effect on the success of the campaign,” he added. Brig Mohammed Al-Maliki, traffic expert and general coordinator of the national campaign said teenagers were at the top of the list when it comes to involvement in accidents and suffering injuries. “ That is why we are targeting this segment of our society. We also thank IBQ for partnering with us on this very important initiative.” George Nasra, CEO of IBQ, said: “At IBQ, we consider our social responsibility one of our top priorities and this is based on our solid conviction in the significant role the bank can achieve by supporting the growth and prosperity of society.” http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=February2009&file=Local_News200902114270.xml
