A WOMAN driver was fined QR10,000 for reckless driving following an accident that led to the death of a pedestrian last November. The court also ordered the Egyptian woman to pay, jointly with her insurance company, QR150,000 blood money to the family of the deceased. She was further slapped with a three-month driving ban. The court heard the woman was driving at 60 kph in Nasr Street when she hit a young Palestinian man. He died of his injuries two days later. The woman claimed she had not seen the pedestrian and that the street had been quiet at the time of the collision. However, a policeman called as a witness said the area had been extremely busy and the driver’s negligence was the sole cause of the accident. Passing a guilty verdict, the court said: “In such a busy street, she was supposed to take extreme caution instead of driving hastily.” The accident happened on November 14, some six weeks after the new traffic law was implemented imposing heavier fines on law-breaking motorists. The decision is open for an appeal. GT
