Residents of neighbourhoods on the western side of Doha have called for better public transport services to different parts of the city and Hamad International Airport (HIA).
The demand comes in the wake of a significant rise in people living in workers' housing facilities in areas such as Al Sheehaniya and others.
Speaking to Gulf Times, people residing in labour camps in Al Sheehaniya said that although there were a few bus services between Dukhan and Doha, there was no direct bus service to places such as HIA, Barwa Village and Wakrah.
The residents said they had to rely on taxis or change buses at the Central Bus Station to reach their destinations. They stressed that these options were either expensive or time-consuming.
Asked how their problems could be solved, some suggested an extension of some of the bus services between Dukhan and Doha in the evening to HIA or the introduction of new services from Al Sheehaniya to the airport.
"Such services will be beneficial not only to those going to the airport but also others travelling to city areas such as Abu Hamour, Villaggio, Muaither and neighbouring areas," said the camp manager of a large workers' housing facility belonging to a construction firm.
He observed that there has been a big rise in the number of bus users, especially on weekends, as more workers are arriving for projects that are being executed in the area.
Proposals are also coming from workers to consider operating buses to HIA through the newly opened bridge link on F-Ring Road, which is part of the Expressway project. There has been an increase in the number of people from the western areas using the road to reach the airport, according to sources.
A Mowasalat official recently said the company would explore the possibility of introducing new bus services if proposals came from the residents of newly developed neighbourhoods. (Source)
