The 22nd edition of the Sheikh Jassim bin Mohamed bin Thani Qur’an contest will begin at the Institute of Da‘wah and Islamic Sciences in Doha on November 21.
The contest will see a total of 1,576 participants, including 708 male and 143 female nationals and expatriates registered in the whole Qur’an segment, and 195 male and 530 female Qataris who have applied to compete in the partial segment.
The contest will continue until December 6 and the total value of prizes for the whole and partial Qur’an segments is around QR1,100,000.
According to the contest’s schedule announced by the organising committee, the 22nd edition will begin with a first-stage test for the whole Qur’an for resident females on November 21, to be followed by male participants on November 22.
Testing for nationals on five, 10, 15, 20 and 25 parts of the Qur’an will be held from November 29 to December 1 for males during the evening, and for females from November 28 to December 1 in the evening, except on Saturday, when testing will be both in the morning and evening.
On the morning of December 2, the second stage will be held to test females (both nationals and residents) on the whole Qur’an. For male participants, it will be held on December 2 morning and December 3 morning and evening.
The final stage of testing for female nationals and residents on the whole Qur’an will begin on December 5 evening, and for males on December 6, both in the morning and evening.
The first-place winners for memorising the whole Qur’an with rhythm and accuracy, for nationals as well as for the general and specific segments of memorisers, will receive QR100,000, while the second place winners in the same categories are entitled to QR85,000.
A sum of QR70,000 will go to the third-place winners, QR60,000 to fourth place and QR50,000 to fifth place.
In addition, the committee will award “incentive” prizes to contestants who pass the second stage of the competition in memorising the whole Qur’an. Bonuses will also be given to contestants with beautiful voices.
The organising committee has highlighted the significance of the contest and pointed to the support it receives throughout the year from HE the Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Dr Ghaith bin Mubarak al-Kuwari in view of its contribution to the development of the new generation of Qataris and for fostering competitiveness among Qatari reciters in Qur’an contests.
According to the organising committee, the most distinguishing feature of the 22nd edition of the Sheikh Jassim bin Mohamed bin Thani Qur’an Contest is that the “final celebration will be unique and bring to fruition the long-awaited shift from local and regional to worldwide excellence, with the launch of ‘The First of the Foremost’, the international division of the contest”.
