As part of its ongoing campaign for the people Of Gaza, Qatar University will host a service learning project “For You Gaza”. The event, featuring a debate, contest winner announcement, a five kilometre walk and a bake sale, is being organised by QU’s Foundation Program and External Relations Department, in collaboration with Students Activities Department. “This is a very important event because it addresses an issue that touches us all,” said Dr Khaled Ali, Foundation Program Director. “Additionally it is a service learning event which is part our curriculum in that it offers the students the opportunity to develop such skills as debating, participation, and teamwork.” The event is the second phase of an initiative mounted in January by QU President Prof Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad aimed at helping, fund-raising, raising awareness and supporting Gaza. “The initiative is an umbrella for a series of events intended to rally support for Gaza. During the first event in January, the QU President announced a student contest aimed at raising awareness and participating in support of the Palestinian people of Gaza,” said Zeina Al Azmeh, External Relations Director. The January series featured contests on Best Poster Design, Best Cartoon, Best Poem, and Best Web-Banner. “Seventy-seven entries were received. The winners will be announced in the opening ceremony of the event on April 29 at Ibn Khaldoon Hall. Works of the winners and participants will also be exhibited on the event website,” she said. The event will start with a debate on the topic “Volunteer work should be a mandatory requirement at QU”, led by English Foundation Level 3 female students, tomorrow. The students will also hold a bake sale of homemade cakes, cookies, pastries, and traditional sweets. All the proceeds will go to Qatar Charity. Foundation Program Level 3 male students in conjunction with Student Activities Department will hold a five kilometre walk in which the entire QU community will participate. The race will begin at 4.00pm with pre-registration at 3.30pm. It is aimed at raising financial support to build schools in Gaza. Participants and observers are encouraged to make a donation to the race and buy the event’s “For You Gaza” T-shirts. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=April2009&file=Local_News200904273241.xml
