Interconnection between Qtel and Vodafone Qatar went live yesterday, linking the two telecommunication companies here. With this, Qtel customers can call Vodafone customers, marking a new chapter in the development of telecommunications in Qatar.
With the agreement now in force and the points of connection in place, voice and data traffic can flow across the two independent competitive networks, linking people on Qtel’s fixed and mobile networks with the Vodafone Qatar mobile network.
“This is an exciting day for customers across Qatar, as they can now fully experience the realities of having two competitive telecom providers, and ensure that they stay connected with friends and family, whichever operator they elect to use,” said Adel Al Mutawa, Executive Director, Group Communications, Qtel.
The retail rate for calling Vodafone Qatar customers from a Qtel phone will be 55 dirhams per minute. Calls to Vodafone Qatar customers will cost 55 dirhams per minute for Hala, Shahry and landline customers, and users of Q-cards and payphones. Video calls will cost 65 dirhams per minute; SMS will cost 40 dirhams per text message, and MMS 90 dirhams for pictures and QR1.20 for video.
“We have always welcomed competition in this market, and have been preparing for this day for more than five years,” Al Mutawa said
