QPO goes to Hollywood

The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) will perform a film music programme, Hollywood: A Musical Celebration, on June 27 at 7.30pm at the Aspire Hall. This will be the last evening concert of the season by QPO. The guest conductor will be Frank Strobel, who is known for arranging and performing new scores for silent film classics, such as Metropolis, City Lights, Modern Times and much more. He has also worked on many contemporary German, British and American films and TV movies. He is the Artistic Director of the European Film Philharmonic Institute in Berlin and has been involved with renowned orchestras such as the Oslo Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Lyon and NDR Radio Orchestra Hannover. Original Hollywood soundtracks will be accompanied by visuals and the programme will be narrated by Manfred Callsen, a freelance actor and presenter for several broadcasting film and TV productions. Since 2001 Callsen performed as presenter and narrator at Symphonic Film Music Concerts. The music will sum up the remarkable role of music in the 20th century, encompassing the wide varieties of genres. In the first part of the programme, famous scores from romantic and fantasy dramas, to thrillers, colourful action and adventure and science fiction will be performed in a chronological sequence, from old to new. Gone with the Wind, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the Best of James Bond and Pirates of the Caribbean will be among the dozen of scores presented. In the second part , QPO will perform A Tribute to Star Wars, whose soundtrack was composed by John Williams, winning him an Academy Award in 1978.
