Qatari student murdered in gang attack in UK A foreign student from Qatar was visiting Britain to learn about its culture and traditions has been murdered by a mob of thugs in a drunken racist attack. Mohammed Al-Majed, 16, died from severe head injuries two days after the unprovoked assault in the seaside town of Hastings, East Sussex. The youngster, from the wealthy Gulf state of Qatar, had barely been in the country five weeks and was due to return home this coming weekend. Witnesses said he was set upon as he left a takeaway with a group of friends shortly before midnight on Friday. The students were beaten, kicked and pelted with glass bottles by a gang of youths who stamped repeatedly on Mohammed's head. The teenager was taken to hospital but died on Sunday. Police yesterday confirmed they were treating the incident as a racially motivated attack. Mohammed was one of 50,000 students who study English in Hastings each year. The once-prosperous seaside town has developed a notorious reputation in recent years for antisocial behaviour and violent crime. In the run-up to the attack, Mohammed had been socialising at the U.S.A. Fried Chicken kebab house. At the back of the shop there is a bar area with pool tables and couches, which has become a regular haunt of foreign students who study English at a nearby languages school. Owner Remzi Tanriverdi, 43, said the attack happened after a pair of youths - who are well known as troublemakers - turned up at the shop and started drinking cans of lager at the picnic benches outside. They were soon joined by four more youths, including two girls, all of whom were drinking beer and bottles of alcopop. Mr Tanriverdi asked them to leave but they refused and hurled abuse at him. He said: 'After I asked them to leave, I noticed a police car pull up, so I went over and spoke to the officers. 'I asked them to keep an eye on the boys, and they said they would - then left. Less than an hour later, Mohammed had been beaten to death. There are no words that can describe the horror of what happened. The attack was unprovoked and without reason.' Mohammed's room- mate, Abdul Aziz, 17, said his fellow students were in shock. 'We cannot believe something like this could happen. We will never come back here.' Mohammed's father flew to England as soon as he heard about the attack. A member of the family, who are thought to run several businesses in Doha, including a jewellers, said: 'We're absolutely devastated. This was supposed to be a special trip for Mohammed and we never imagined he would be killed. It's tragic, just tragic.' In Qatar, it is considered an honour to be chosen to travel to the UK for a language course. Mohammed and his friends would have been given a strict code of conduct to abide by. Aside from learning English, the group were told about the importance of people from different faiths living together in 'harmony'. Three youths aged 17, 18 and 20 were arrested over the attack. They were later bailed. DailyMail UK When I was in England, despite being half British and not looking typically Arabic, as soon as someone discovered my ethnicity they treated me much more differently. My Chinese friends complained of Racism and just the other week a young Chinese couple studying at Uni in London were murdered by a gang... The funny thing is, if this happened to a British person in Qatar it would be international headlines.
