Qatar turns a new page in managing its development with the launch of its first National Development Strategy tomorrow in Doha. The five-year (2011-2016) strategy, formally approved by the nation’s leadership, reaffirms a commitment to sustainability. It is aimed at providing tangible benefits for citizens while ensuring that the legacy left for future generations is undiminished. According to a spokesperson for the General Secretariat for Development Planning, the strategy builds on initiatives already under way, “drawing on relevant knowledge and international best practices”. In some important areas, the strategy foreshadows new approaches for Qatar. With the strategy in place, government institutions and the private sector now have a framework to provide clear direction for their own planning and decisions. The strategy promises action and improved outcomes across a wide front. Improved delivery of health, education and other services, better attuned to societal needs, is anticipated.
