Qatar participated in the Arab-Russian Cooperation Forum held in Moscow, with a delegation chaired by His Excellency Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi.

The two-day forum was attended by H.E. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and foreign ministers from 13 Arab countries.

The forum participants adopted a plan of action, where its principles and objectives are to be implemented during the period from 2019 to 2021.

The plan stressed the importance of cooperation between the Arab countries and the Russian Federation in the political, economic, cultural, social, educational, scientific and media fields.

The plan emphasised the need for finding solutions to crises based on the resolutions of international legitimacy, maintaining international peace and security and ensuring political consultations within the framework of the senior official's joint committee.

The plan also touched on the expansion of economic cooperation through activating the work of the joint governmental committees and the establishment of major economic events such as Arabia Expo, which ended its fourth edition a few days ago in Moscow. In addition to the support of the joint Arab-Russian business councils and chambers of commerce, industry, and cooperation in the fields of agriculture and trade, as the volume of annual trade exchange between Russia and Arab countries amounts to nearly $21 billion.

The plan focused on encouraging the teaching of Arabic and Russian in educational institutions and to give interest to translation.

It also discussed cooperation between the Arab and Russian media and the establishment of joint agreements.

The new plan is based on a memorandum of cooperation signed in 2009 between the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States and the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under which the forum was established.

Participants in the forum stressed facilitating scientific, educational and cultural cooperation through establishing art festivals and book exhibitions to be held between Arab and Russian universities.

It was also agreed to establish an Arab cultural centre in Moscow in order to build mutual understanding, especially since Russia includes a large Arab community. (QNA)
