In a first in the country, six Independent schools and two private schools will introduce traffic safety in their curricula from the next academic year starting September. This was disclosed by Haya Al Kuwari, Director of the Education Institute at the Supreme Education Council addressing a workshop on traffic safety jointly organised by the Ministry of Interior and Shell. Schools have been encouraged to include lessons on traffic safety in their curricula as part of the national traffic safety strategy. Al Kuwari said it was highly important to raise traffic safety awareness among students and the youth since traffic accidents cause 12.5 per cent of the total deaths in the country. The Qatar International School and Gulf English School will be the pioneering private schools to teach traffic safety. The six independent schools are Al Rashad Model School for Boys, Al Muthanna bin Haritha Model School for Boys, Hamad bin Abdul Mutalib Preparatory School for Boys, Ahmed bin Hanbal Secondary School for Boys and Abdullah bin Ali Al Misned Secondary School for Boys.
