Qatar’s Grandmaster Chen qualifies for World Cup

After winning the women’s title at the 2013 FIDE-rated Asian Zone 3.1 Championship, held in Doha recently, Qatar’s Grandmaster Zhu Chen has qualified for the World Cup scheduled to be held in Norway in August this year, officials said. Chen finished the competition on eight-and-a-half points. She was followed by Iran’s two Women International Masters, Hejazipour Mitra and Ghader Pour Shayesteh. In the men’s category, Iranian Grandmaster Darini Pouria (pictured below) booked a place at the World Cup in Norway. The 22-year-old Pouria accumulated seven-and-a-half points from nine rounds to emerge as the winner at the Qatar tournament. Iranian Grandmasters Golizadeh Asghar and Ghaem Maghami Ehsan finished second and third respectively. Qatar’s top-rated Grandmaster Mohammed Al Medaihki finished fourth, followed by his compatriot Mohammed Al Sayed. Jordan’s International Master (IM) Khader Sami came sixth while Qatari IM Hussein Nezad was placed seventh. Ten countries from the Asian Zone 3.1 competed in the nine-day championship. Besides, hosts Qatar, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Palestine, UAE, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, Qatari Grandmaster Mohammed Naser Al Sayed is set to take part in the World Blitz and Rapid Chess Championship which takes place in Khantymansiysk, Russia from June 4 to 11. This week, Al Sayed and Husain Aziz Nezad (IM) are competing in the Asian Individual Chess Championship Classical Chess and Blitz Chess in Manilla, Philippines. Source : Qatar Chronicle
