THE Nationality and Travel Documents department at Ministry of Interior has formed two mobile work groups to collect biometric data to issue Smart ID Cards for Qataris.
“The groups have been formed in line with the directives from the Minister of State for Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani,” the department’s director Lt Col Abdullah Saa’d al-Buainain said.
“We are scanning the retina of the eye, and prints of the right and left index fingers, for the card which would have a electronically read photo and signature,” another official at the department, Lt Zahra al-Naoubi said.
One group, which is working at Qtel’s main building now, will continue there for two weeks. The second group will do a fortnight-long assignment at Qatar National Olympic Committee headquarters after two weeks. Thereafter, the groups will move to headquarters of various organisations, companies and establishments.
“The new Smart ID card can also be used for several purposes,” al-Buainain explained. These include issuance, renewal or cancellation of residence permit, re-activation of residence permit, transferring a residence permit from one passport to another one, separation of dependents from the passport, sponsorship transfer, issuance of new born babies residence permit or exit permit and issuance of visa in case of prior permission.
Payment of traffic fines, renewal of driving licence, issuance of a new one instead of damaged or lost driving licence are some of the other uses of the Smart ID card, which can also be used at e-gates at airports and to move between GCC countries.
Qtel’s executive director for communication and public relations Adil Mohamed al-Mutawwa thanked the Nationality and Travel Documents department for their service.
