Qatar Rail launched today “Metro Art” an exhibition which uses Qatari art to bring Doha Metro to life for the entire community to enjoy. The exhibition is at the Qatar Fine Arts Society at Katara Cultural Village, Building 13, which is the venue for the exhibition that is now open to the public and will take place until 2nd April 2016.

Done in partnership with Qatar Fine Arts Society (QFAS), Metro Art exhibition involves over 35 Qatari artists of different disciplines. One of the main highlights of the exhibition is the interpretation of the future stations of the Doha Metro as seen through the eyes of four of these high profile artists.

Metro Art also includes many exciting events and activities that are appealing to the entire family, including spectacular laser light shows, live graffiti art and 3D painting and live entertainment. There will also be children’s workshops every weekend for ages 4 to 12 which focus on fun, Metro themed art activities, including sand painting, clay modelling, Lego building, as well as storytelling and puzzle solving. Organised school trips will also be hosted in addition to receptions for business communities in which they will learn about the Doha Metro project, the major milestones that have already been achieved as well as future plans.

Commenting on the initiative, Eng. Abdulla Abdulaziz T. Al Subaie, Managing Director, Qatar Rail, said, “Metro systems throughout the world use art to make the customer experience more interesting and to celebrate the role of the system in the city, and we believe that this is something that we can achieve to its full potential here in Qatar. Metro Art is part of our commitment to deliver more than just a transportation system but rather a statement of our country and its people. As well as shining a light on talented Qatari artists, we are using this exhibition to reach out to the local community, and particularly the next generation to inspire them about the integrated railway project that is set to change people’s lives in Qatar forever.”

In response to a recent directive issued by His Highness The Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani that all paintings to be used in the Doha Metro should be designed by Qatari artists, Qatar Rail intends to use initiatives like Metro Art and the power of art and creativity to educate, engage and inspire the people of Qatar about this landmark project.

Metro Art is part of a month dedicated to arts, creativity and performance that was launched by Qatar Rail and kicked off on February 29th with “Qatar Rail Theatre Festival”, a three day theatrical festival which featured productions done by local students based on their perceptions of the exciting landmark project.

Doha Metro will enable people in Doha to connect more rapidly and reflect the vibrancy and spirit of the city. The first phase of the Doha Metro project, which will be one of the most advanced metro systems, is expected to be complete in the fourth quarter of 2019. It will cover the greater Doha area and will connect the main commercial and residential areas throughout the city.
