Under the visionary guidance of its Chairperson, HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Museums is delighted to present a series of exciting and dynamic exhibitions opening this Autumn in Doha. These artistic and cultural events will take place in venues across the country and will help enrich the lives of all those who live in and visit Qatar, by providing them with new experiences of art, culture and heritage to enjoy.

Qatar Museums is also proud to present several exhibitions and events as part of the Qatar China 2016 Year of Culture, a landmark initiative developed to deepen understanding between both nations and their people through mutual exchanges of arts, culture, heritage and sport. Qatar will also begin its Year of Culture with Germany in 2017.

"Qatar and Germany have very strong ties and the partnership will celebrate and explore common values between each of our cultures, breaking down barriers and opening minds," said Mohammed Al Othman, the Public and International Relations Director at Qatar Museums.

In addition to the new exhibitions and events that will take place this fall, there are particular art installations that will open such as the Flying Men sculptures by Dia Al-Azzawi, which will be located at Hamad International Airport.

"Right now it's the main point where people come together, so we're trying to create a more comfortable atmosphere at the airport," said Sheikha Maryam Al-Thani, Public Arts Curator at Qatar Museums.

Al-Azzawi's installation will open in a few weeks at HIA and will include two life-size sculptures.

There will also be many more events coming up towards the end of the year, such as another treasure hunt like the one the Museum of Islamic Art had for Eid ul-Adha, but this time it will be held during Qatar National Day, which is on December 18.

Location: Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art and QM Gallery Al Riwaq

QM will present a monograph of one of the most renowned modern artists of the Arab world: Dia Al-Azzawi. The exhibition, showcasing over 546 works across fifty years and a range of media, aims at mapping an itinerary of modernism and profiles the practice of the Iraqi artist. Curated by Catherine David, the exhibition is scheduled to open 16 October 2016 at Mathaf and 17 October at Al Riwaq.

Fragments

An exhibition by Mahmoud Obaidi

Dates: 18 October 2016 – 30 January 2017

Location: Qatar Museum Gallery Katara

In this exhibition, Mahmoud Obaidi retraces the 'organised chaos' that led to the destruction of Iraq, and presents a response to witnessing the city of Baghdad fall piece by piece. In his work, Obaidi recreates what has been stolen or destroyed to try to piece the city back together again. The exhibition shows how Obaidi is grappling with the destruction of an 8,000-year-old civilisation, which has been laid waste in less than a fraction of that time.

Chinese Festival

Dates: 2 November 2016 – 5 November 2016

Location: Museum of Islamic Art Park

The Chinese Festival is presented by Qatar Museums, the Ministry of Culture of China and the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture. The festival will present the rich and varied cultures of China in Qatar in a weekend of fun events presented at the MIA Park from 2 – 5 November 2016. Some of Zhejiang’s leading musicians and performers will perform in a beautifully-conceived outdoor setting that will include a Chinese market, Chinese tea house, stage, photography exhibition space, food stalls and a children’s area. China will be celebrated with musical performances, film, children’s activities and delicious food.

Qatar China 2016 Photography Exhibition

Dates: November 2016

This exhibition presents the work of four Chinese and two Qatari photographers who travelled to each other’s country to visually document another way of life and capture another culture through their own lenses. By interacting with people in their environments, the photographers present insights into what is otherwise considered normal daily life. The images represent each photographer’s individual style allowing a unique view of other human beings.

Treasures of China

Dates: 6 September 2016 – 7 January 2017

Location: Museum of Islamic Art

Terracotta soldiers from the First Emperor’s Terracotta Army will be on show at the Museum of Islamic Art where visitors will get the chance to meet the warriors who guarded a hidden empire. The exhibition will display 116 pieces dating from the Neolithic period to the Qing Dynasty, spanning over 5,000 years of China’s history. Potteries, bronzes, jades, porcelains, gold, silver, enamel and many other Chinese treasures will be on show, selected from 5 museums and heritage institutions from across China.

Muhammad Ali: Tribute to a Legend

Dates: 7 July 2016 – 5 November 2016

Location: Museum of Islamic Art

An exhibition dedicated posthumously to world boxing legend Muhammad Ali (1942-2016). The temporary exhibition is curated by Qatar Museums’ 3-2-1 Olympic and Sports Museum and will present a unique collection of artefacts from the boxing legend’s career, including photography from Ali’s outdoor exhibition bout at the Doha Stadium in 1971 and memorabilia spanning his journey to the 1960 Rome Olympics; Ali’s world title winning bout against Sonny Liston in 1964 and his final world title winning fight against Leon Spinks in New Orleans in 1978.

Fair Skies ®

Dates: 22 September 2016 – 8 January 2017

Location: Project Space, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art

Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha has dedicated part of its museum to a new display of permanent collection work by Iraqi- Canadian contemporary artist Mahmoud Obaidi. On show from 22nd September 2016 – 8th January 2017, the installation, entitled Fair Skies ®, is inspired by the artist’s own experience with airport security, and can be read as a social, political, and cultural critique of stereotypical assumptions.

Curated by Mathaf’s Curator Leonore-Namkha Beschi, the installation is on view in Mathaf’s Project Space, dedicated to emerging artists and curators’ experimentations with new ideas and forms of presentation.

Pearls: Jewels from the Sea and the Rivers

Dates: 27 September 2016 – 8 January 2017

Location: National Museum of China, Beijing

Following its huge success in Japan, the UK, Brazil and Turkey, QM has again launched Pearls: Jewels from the Sea and the Rivers, which this time has travelled to China as part of the Qatar China 2016 Year of Culture, which continues to celebrate the relations between the State of Qatar and the Republic of China. The exhibition presents the history and legend, mythology and meaning of pearls and pearl jewellery from Qatar and around the world, and contains more than 100 pieces from around the world including the Gulf, Europe and Asia.
