Here’s what’s happened since last week’s updates: Saudi Arabia set to buy $15bn US missile defence system despite human rights concerns
The 39th Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit took place on December 9 in the Saudi capital. However, the summit came to an end without any major breakthroughs to resolve a diplomatic crisis that continues to grip the region.
Speaking during a press conference following the closing session of the 39th GCC, the Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said:
“Brothers in Qatar know what is required of them to return as an active member of the council”.
“The members of the Gulf Cooperation Council are keen that the crisis with Qatar will have no impact on the Council,” Jubeir added.
“The Gulf states are one family and any disagreement is resolved within the Gulf house. The stance towards Qatar came to push it to change its policies,” Jubeir said.
A delegation headed by Qatar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi represented the country at the GCC summit instead of Qatar's H.H. the Emir. The decision was met with criticism from some of the council's members, but Qatar brushed aside the comments.
"Qatar can make its own decisions and had attended [last year's] Kuwait summit while the leaders of the boycotting countries did not," said Ahmed bin Saeed Al Rumaihi, director of the information office at Qatar's foreign ministry.
