The per capita water consumption in Qatar is the highest in the world, with the total consumption recorded at 216 cubic metres in 2012 as reported by Qatar Chronicle This was revealed by officials of the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) on the occasion of the Arab Water Day observed by the Arab Water Ministerial Council yesterday. “I call on all nationals and expatriates to think about sustainability and save water for the coming generations,” Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari, Kahramaa President, said. He said that the scarcity of fresh water resources in the region was in itself a major challenge. Saif Al Malki, Director of Water Affairs Department at Kahramaa, said that an estimated investment of QR22bn is required for the 10-year project on the development of water network in Qatar. He added that new water desalination plants will be set up soon in the country and maintenance of the current water pumping stations will be carried out to meet the growing demand. Plans to set up a water desalination plant, with a capacity of 36 million gallon per day at Ras Abu Fontas, were already approved. The plant will be functional by the mid of 2015. In the water sector, the country is expected to witness developments worth QR3.2bn in the next five years alone and before 2022. Commemorating the event, Qatar‘s Minister of Energy and Industry, H E Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada, said that Qatar‘s participation in the event reflects the importance of preserving water resources and to bolster the integration of the Arab world’s developmental plans related to water resources and food security. At the occasion, Kahramaa also organised exhibitions at Landmark and Villaggio on Sunday and Monday, respectively. A large number of children along with their parents, Kahramaa’s senior functionaries, dignitaries including Arab League’s Secretary-General, Nabil El Arabi and environmentalists visited the exhibitions.
